Assumption students have been participating in the Odyssey of the Mind competition for over 10 years. When the school first learned about the competition, our teachers knew this was perfect for our students. Odyssey of the Mind is all about teaching kids to creatively problem solve. It’s not about memorizing facts, short cuts, or taking tests. It is about getting a difficult long term problem, and figuring out how to solve it, as a team, in a creative way. Our teachers thought,” Isn’t this what we would love our kids to be able to do?…. persevere through tough problems, work together as a team, problem solve, and find creative solutions?” Yes, this is exactly what we want all of our students to be able to do!

Odyssey problems range from creating a skit that incorporates several tasks, to building a tower made from balsa wood that can hold hundreds of pounds of weight. Over the years we have had teams work on all sorts of problems. Assumption has a reputation of faring well at our Los Angeles region competition, sending teams to compete at the state level. In the spring of 2019, we were so proud to have two of our teams place 1st and 3rd at the state competition. We sent one team to the world finals in Michigan!

And we can’t talk about Odyssey without mentioning the amazing collaboration with our parent coaches. We are so lucky that we have such committed parents, teachers, and students.
