WE EDUCATE OUR STUDENTS IN A NURTURING ENVIRONMENT, ROOTED IN GOSPEL VALUES AND CATHOLIC TRADITIONS, WHERE EACH CHILD IS RECOGNIZED, RESPECTED, AND CHERISHED AS A CHILD OF GOD.

Our Catholic, faith-based kindergarten program is both developmentally focused and academically challenging. Daily, students take part in whole-group instruction, small-group center time, and hands-on independent activities. Assumption kindergarten students discover the wonders of learning in a nurturing and welcoming environment, where all students are valued and respected. Our classroom is an exciting place where students work together, learn from one another, and build confidence and lasting friendships.

Parent Quote

Our daughter has thrived beyond our expectations, and we couldn’t be more thrilled with Assumption Kindergarten. She’s learning a lot in a wonderful, caring and nurturing environment. And the Assumption community of parents and friends really make you feel comfortable. I feel like ABVM is the best kept secret in the San Gabriel Valley (shhhh!). –Kindergarten Parent

Focus on Faith

Students learn about the love of God and the teachings of the Catholic Faith and Church through their Religion text-Christ Our Life, Religion Service Journals-To Serve as Jesus Did, and participation in school-wide service projects. Our kindergarten students celebrate Mass weekly with our school and parish community. And prayer is a daily, cherished practice in our classroom. Our class atmosphere is based on the teachings of Jesus Christ and fosters love, kindness, and a sense of community.

Learning Centers

Reading

Students work in a small group setting to learn about and utilize the five key areas of Reading:

  • Phonemic Awareness, Systematic/Explicit Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary, & Comprehension.
  • Students learn from a comprehensive, research-based program with fun, theme-based units that teach key reading strategies.

Writing

Students receive explicit letter writing instruction and practice in the D’Nealian writing style in a small group setting. Further, Assumption kindergarten students become proficient beginning writers as they follow our reading program’s corresponding language arts component, which helps develop higher-order thinking and provides daily writing instruction and practice.

Math

Kindergarten students enjoy our daily, small-group, hands-on math lessons, which regularly incorporate tangible manipulatives like counting bears, linking cubes, and patterns blocks. Students learn correct number formation, shapes, counting, patterns, graphs, sequencing, sorting, money, key math vocabulary, telling time, addition, and subtraction.

Science

Kindergarten science instruction includes learning about animals, plants, and our earth through texts, hands-on activities, films, and interactive websites. Students love discovering their world around them through questioning, critical exploration, discussions, and activities. Real-world learning and responsibility is highlighted further through our increased awareness and school-wide commitment to a reduce, reuse, and recycle program.

Social Studies

Social Studies is a fun and engaging time for students to learn about their world around them and its people, both past and present. Students study location of objects, community symbols, maps, and holidays, to name a few. Kindergarten students enjoy exploring many of these areas through artistic means as well.

Art

In kindergarten, students enjoy various artistic activities, utilizing paint, markers, crayons, colored pencils, glitter, stamps, stickers, modeling clay, and more. They create and explore through both content area-based and holiday inspired art projects.

Technology

The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary kindergarten classroom boasts a cutting-edge, SMART Board interactive whiteboard and eight additional computers. All learning styles (visual, auditory, and kinesthetic) are addressed through the daily use of our classroom technology. Students enjoy engaging, multi-media based lessons and practice reading and math skills, while utilizing computer technology.

Even More Fun…

Kindergarten students also delight in engaging, daily dance and movement in their classroom. And they greatly look forward to Thursday afternoon Free Play Time, which provides students the opportunity to choose and learn at various play-based centers and to develop positive social interaction skills.

In addition, ABVM kindergarteners enjoy their weekly music, technology, physical education classes, and school library visits.
